Common questions
Which photo should I use for my dating profile?
- Rarely the one you like most. You have spent your whole life seeing your face reversed in a mirror, and you remember the day each photo was taken, so you end up rating the memory instead of the image. The reliable method is to let other people compare them for you. Put your shortlist in, send the link to a few friends, and the photo that keeps winning is your opener.
How do I choose the best LinkedIn or CV photo?
- Judge each option against the others rather than on its own. A headshot that looks perfectly good in isolation often loses every head to head comparison once there is something to lose to. Upload four or five, share the link with colleagues rather than close friends, since they read you the way a recruiter will, and go with the ranking instead of the loudest single opinion.
Why do I look worse in photos than in the mirror?
- Because the mirror shows you a reversed face and you have grown used to that version. A camera shows the one everybody else has always seen, so it looks subtly wrong to you and completely normal to them. This is exactly why your own judgement of your photos is unreliable, and why asking other people is not vanity. It is correcting for a bias you cannot see past on your own.
How do I A/B test my photos?
- Show people two at a time and record which one wins. Rating photos individually does not work, because scores drift and everyone uses the scale differently. A head to head comparison forces one clear decision every time. PhotoDuel builds the pairs for you, collects the votes, and ranks the results with an Elo rating, the same system used for chess.
How many photos should I compare?
- Four to eight works best. With fewer than four the ranking has too little to go on, and past ten the number of possible pairs grows quickly enough that voters give up before they finish. You can upload up to ten in one gallery.
Is it free, and does anyone need an account?
- It is free, and nobody signs up. Not you, and not the people voting. They open the link, tap through the pairs, and are finished in about fifteen seconds. There are no ads.
Can anyone else find my photos or my results?
- No. Each gallery sits behind its own unguessable link, is never listed publicly, and tells search engines not to index it. Only the people you send the link to can vote. You can also hide the results so that only you see the ranking, and every gallery deletes itself after 30 days.
